The Oscar buzz is on and it will start trending on social networking sites in few hours. Every year this time of the year, The Academy announces the best Hollywood has to offer and this time, just for fun, i am here to do the honors, so lets get on with it.
There are many categories and i will be dealing the small and yet important categories first leading to the best picture. I am going to be providing a valid reason for my choice. Mad Max: Fury Road
Fun Fact: According to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, the origins of the name are uncertain, but \”a popular story has been that an Academy librarian and eventual executive director, Margaret Herrick, thought it resembled her Uncle Oscar and said so; and that the Academy staff began referring to it as Oscar.\” (Like for Real!)
- \”The Big Short\”
- \”Mad Max: Fury Road\”
- \”The Revenant\”
- Star Wars: The Force Awakens\”
And I think Oscar will go to: Mad Max:Fury Road, Mad Max Fury Road, was influentially long shot movie with multiple action packed small scenes which were craftily stitched up to raise up the viewer\’s Adrenaline, and having a woman editor is a plus point Academy would be looking for.
Emmanuel Lubezki, The Revenant
Edward Lachman, Carol
Robert Richardson, The Hateful Eight
Roger Deakins, Sicario
John Seale, Mad Max: Fury Road
Who I think should and will Win:Emmanuel Lubezki, The Revenant, Emmanuel has won the award for the last two years too with Birdman in 2015 and Gravity in 2014, he still looks strong ad will definitely be heading towards the dais to collect the award, and become first one to achieve a hat-trick of oscars.
Best Production Design
Nominations are :
Bridge of Spies
The Danish Girl
Mad Max: Fury Road
Who I think should and will Win: Mad Max:Fury Road again for its extraordinary vehicle designs and they even have a truck with band performing the music with cavalcade, what else do you need.
Best Costume Design
Nominations are :
Sandy Powell, Carol
Sandy Powell, Cinderella
Paco Delgado, The Danish Girl
Jenny Beavan, Mad Max: Fury Road
Jacqueline West, The Revenant
This is a award given mostly to movies with lavish Costumes and beautiful gowns and Sandy Powell does well in his two nominees especially in Carol but can you out match this:
I dont think so, Mad Max Fury Road deserves this award more than anything, from strange headgear to leather jackets, the designing was excellent.
I am leaving The Sound mixing and Sound Editing, because it is hard to tell this time and Revenant and Mad Max both are equally good at doing these.
Best Visual Effects
Mad Max: Fury Road
Star Wars: The Force Awakens
While the CGI in Star Wars Force awakens was quite neat and best of our time, Visual Effects does not only contain those done on computer and the cars striking each other and explosions in Mad Max: Fury Road wins over any CGI any day. The use of good Practical Effects is rare nowadays and George Miller did it well in his movie. This is the last time Mad Max is in my list, I hope so.
Best Original Song
- \”Earned It” from Fifty Shades of Grey
- “Manta Ray” from Racing Extinction
- “Simple Song #3” from Youth
- “Writing’s on the Wall” from Spectre
- “Til It Happens to You” from The Hunting Ground
If You ask me Earned it is the best among them, and it deserves an award, but then think about it, 50 Shades of Grey will go out as an oscar winning Movie, I dont think Academy will let this happen, i like Sam Smith\’s Writing on the Wall too. But Earned it should win.
Nominations are :
Ennio Morricone, The Hateful Eight
Carter Burwell, Carol
Jóhann Jóhannsson, Sicario
John Williams, Star Wars: The Force Awakens
Thomas Newman, Bridge of Spies
This is my category, Background Score is something which I listen to intently and think is an essential part of a movie, I actually listen to scores from Hans Zimmer and Williams when I write and study, yep that is how much I listen to background music of a movie. Ennio Morricone for The Hateful Eight will win the award , the master proved that he still has it with the theme he made for Hateful Eight, it was so full of Suspense and thrill that I was at the edge of the seat the whole time. And he is 87 years old without any oscar, this is a golden opportunity to gift Morricone an oscar which he rightly deserves.
Best Animated Film
I am not even going to write nominations, I think there is no other award category which has such clear shot winner as Inside out is in this Category. Pixar\’s Inside out has been the favorite since its release months before and if i would be allowed, i would myself go there and hand him the award myself right now. It deserves every award it gets and I can\’t praise this movie enough. It Deserved a best Picture Nomination too.
Best Adapted Screenplay
Drew Goddard, The Martian
Nick Hornby, Brooklyn
Adam McKay and Charles Randolph, The Big Short
Phyllis Nagy, Carol
Emma Donoghue, Room
I am going to be a little Biased on this, I recently watched Room and it has a much deeper emotional Connection with me so I am going to pick Room for this, but to be honest Martian and more importantly The Big Short has much more chance of winning in this category.
Best Original Screenplay
Tom McCarthy and Josh Singer, Spotlight
Matt Charman, Joel & Ethan Coen, Bridge of Spies
Pete Docter, Meg LeFauve, Josh Cooley, Ronnie del Carmen, Inside Out
Alex Garland, Ex Machina
Jonathan Herman, S. Leigh Savidge, Alan Wenkus, Andrea Berloff, Straight Outta Compton
I think Spotlight should take the spot for excellent research and writing a complicated script with a controversial topic and keeping it simple and extraordinary, The story which takes place in years has been handled delicately and written with a surgeon\’s precision. Pete Doctor\’s Inside Out comes close with its genius Psycho Analysis of a teenager\’s brain.
Best Supporting Actor
Christian Bale, The Big Short
Tom Hardy, The Revenant
Mark Rylance, Bridge of Spies
Sylvester Stallone, Creed
Mark Ruffalo, Spotlight
Who I think will Win: Sylvester Stallone for his role in Creed, the inspirational role is quite well acted, but the award will be given for sentimental value more than his acting recalling his role of Rocky in 70s. Academy will love to award Stallone for his old career.
Who I think Should Win: Mark Ruffalo for Spotlight he was the show stopper, the eye opener and the best actor in the well acted movie, he took spotlight to his heart and gave a great acting with a simplicity and accepting the character to his core, he deserves the oscar.
Best Supporting Actress
Rooney Mara, Carol
Rachel McAdams, Spotlight
Alicia Vikander, The Danish Girl
Kate Winslet, Steve Jobs
Jennifer Jason Leigh, The Hateful Eight
Who I think Should Win: Jennifer Jason Leigh for the Hateful Eight, one word to describe Leigh would be terrifying, she was incredible in the Hateful Eight, full of fun and terrifying to watch , her performance was one of the most original acting i Have seen in last year.
Who I think Will Win: Alicia Vikander for The Danish Girl, she was in a word different and that innocent female character the Academy likes to award, she was good in her acting and to top it all was this year\’s performance of her in Ex Machina.
Cate Blanchett, Carol
Brie Larson, Room
Jennifer Lawrence, Joy
Charlotte Rampling, 45 Years
Saoirse Ronan, Brooklyn
Who I think will and Should Win : I think this is already decided, no other actress deserves the award more than her portrayal of a mother trying to save her 5 year old child, the portrayal of a woman going deep into depression was done brilliantly by Brie Larson in Room.
Bryan Cranston, Trumbo
Leonardo DiCaprio, The Revenant
Michael Fassbender, Steve Jobs
Eddie Redmayne, The Danish Girl
Matt Damon, The Martian
Are You Kidding me!: Leonardo DiCaprio should and will win this award, this is now likely a fact in Public now, but is it substantial, while Leo\’s Acting was good, Eddie Was even better. But Sorry Eddie Redmayne, it looks like Leo Will get it this year at last.
How Much fun it would be if Leo Does not win that award, The Internet will break down . HAHA
Alejandro González Iñárritu, The Revenant
Tom McCarthy, Spotlight
Adam McKay, The Big Short
George Miller, Mad Max: Fury Road
Lenny Abrahamson, Room
I want Adam McKay to win this award, but the direction of Spotlight was not its best point, which was its acting. I think Alejadro González Iñárritu will win this year again for The Revenant, it is rare that a director wins Oscar consecutively, i think it has never been done before, so we might as well see history getting made tomorrow.
This is the difficult one, the biggie :
Please PLEASE , the powers of the world : Let Spotlight win this award they rightly deserve, while The Revenant is the one with most number of awards, I think There was not a better movie than Spotlight this year, it was spot on hard hitting excellent acted movie and to top it all a movie with broader goal in mind.
Revenant has more chances of winning the award but I want Spotlight to take the spot.
Thats all from me today, see you tomorrow and let us see, how many I get right Haha.
